ckreef Posted February 22, 2016 Report Share Posted February 22, 2016 This type of damage is caused when the weight of the lid is set on something uneven and the full weight is only on the edge of the tiles. LOL I've made that same mistake before.. Closing the lid firmly on tongs or something solid can do that to.. Seen that too.. That won't re-attach there because the grout on the edges dries out completely.. You will have/need to use the acrylic material to re-attach those tiles that were basically pried off the lid. Not a big deal.. This was actually caused by the dome slightly tilted and then sort of dragged across the surface it was sitting on about an inch or two. It's not a big split of the groute and the tiles and grout jacket remained intact. Would fresh groute pushed up in there fix this? My other thought was a JB Weld type fix like I did on mine. It is much less of a situation then I had. I have an extra small tube of black groute since I own two KK's. I was going to send him one of those as shipping from my house will only take a day or two and cost next to nothing. A few additional notes: My wife didn't see the grill in person until we carried it around the house and set it on the patio. She said, "Wow, that's pretty!" After giving me approval for the purchase, she started giving me a bit of grief last week. Little comments like "I love what you cook on the KJ, I don't see a reason for this one." "It's the price of a used car!" "The KJ is a good size. We don't need more!" etc. I didn't respond to most of them directly. On Saturday, she made one more comment... paused, and said, "Hmm, well... but if you'll like it, I guess that's as good of a reason as any. And I can't be upset about you wanting to try to make food even better for us." By letting her come to that conclusion herself, I think I'm much better off than if I tried to make that argument over and over. The Reef's got to feel how hot the outside of the KJ gets. I had it up around 375 to cook some baked beans, then shut it down when they arrived. It was probably 90 minutes later when Charles touched the outside and felt how hot it still was. So hot, that, it wilted an aloe plant that was next to the KJ. I had slide the KJ over to make room for the KK and didn't really think about the plant that was a foot or so away. Poor thing got a little crisp on some of the tips and generally droopy all over. ETA: Oh, and... my wife says it looks like Sigmund the Sea Monster from the early 1970's show of the same name by Sid and Marty Krofft. My wife seemed to be doing most of the talking about how great they are etc etc. She did brag about how good my food is etc which totally made my day!!! I love that I can cook at 400F for a good few hours and its still cold enough for me to put the cover on as soon as i've taken the food out! ckreef Posted February 22, 2016 Report Share Posted February 22, 2016 This was the first time I had ever seen a KJ other than at a store. I was really surprised at how hot it was. Even when fully heat soaked for 2 or 3 hours in the 550* pizza range my KK's dome never felt that hot. I just didn't realize all this since I went from an Akorn to a KK. It's one thing to cart around my motorcycle, it's paid for and if something happened it's just my loss. A whole other thing carting around someone else's high dollar grill. I will say that is a really smooth riding trailer. I've done 85 mph with the motorcycle on board with zero wobble. I was only willing to do 70 mph with the KK on board. I was just really paranoid. These are straight out of the camera - except I reduced them in GIMP. I'm terrible with photo editing, so I didn't even try. One of these days, I'll learn it.
