Rate this MAPP torch kit please

Recommended Posts

I'm way behind the times but I've been good and deserve a new, reasonably priced toy.

I've never used a torch of any kind to start a fire in a cooker. If the NakedWhiz had an article or review on the topic, I would be studying now.

Since there isn't one, I'm having to wing it. These are on eBay and seem to go for a decent price: http://cgi.ebay.com/ROTHENBERGER-PRO-PROPANE-MAPP-TORCH-SET_W0QQitemZ380011487986QQihZ025QQcategoryZ67057QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Any thoughts? I presume a hose is handy or even critical so that the gas canister need not be inverted? If there is a better internet deal that you know of, please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Gerard, currently this is one of the torches I use: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=91061 . Cheap and works great. I ran by Harbor Freight yesterday to look for a new one with a longer nozzle....no luck. They had the units that hooked up to a 20 lb bottle, but none that connected to a 14.1 oz bottle. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=91037

The Bernzomatic is also available at your local Lowe's or Home Despot, often with a mapp gas cylinder in the package.

There is also a more powerful version available with an adjustment wheel on the stem. It puts out about 40% more heat on full. Overkill for lighting charcoal, but necessary for some brazing and glassblowing tasks.
