  1. So I'm looking at that post by Porkchop and he says he cooked his butts for like 16 hrs.! If I fill the fire box to the brim, can the kk make it THAT long without adding more lump? btw - anyone know where I can find Porkchop's rub recipe? Link to his site is broken in that thread he did a while back.
  2. Porkchop - the link to your website is down. Any way I can get that rub recipe you referenced above?
  3. I was kinda coming to the same conclusion, but was thinking "nah, could not be that easy, could it?" Thanks J! Pics of my 'Butt' to come
  4. First Cook in the books - two 'beer can' chickens...OMG Let it suffice to say our friends we invited over said it was thee BEST chicken they've ever eaten, I'd have to agree. Credit goes to the KK. The Guru kept the temp within + or - 3 degrees ALL DAY Good call on the Guru J, tks! So now the gang wants me to attempt a 'butt' over the weekend. According to the books it'll be a 9 to 12 hour cook. So how much lump do you guys recommend so I don't run out of fuel before the finish line?
  5. My wife got me a "GrilleStone" kit. http://www.goearthstone.com/ Any thoughts on this for cleaning? Oh, and when using Silicone say on the Guru inducer tube and/or a dab to keep the Tru Temp in place on the dome. Just regular silicone okay? I asked about 'heat resistant' silicone at Home Depot and they looked at me like I had two heads.
  6. What do you guys recommend for cleaning the grates? btw - thickest I've ever seen Dennis.
  7. should I wait till my hand stops shaking?
  8. yeah, those pretty little tiles scare me with a drill in my hand
  9. Hmm - think your basic masonry bit will do the job on that ceramic?
  10. Question - just tried to stick the thermometer in the little hole on the dome above the handle. Hole seems too small...did any of you have to drill it out further to accommodate the thermometer?
  11. Well - the trucker came back Friday morning WITH and lift gate and hand truck. He brought the crate to the garage but no further, insisting that insurance/liability concerns *and* therefore company policy prohibited him from any further assistance in getting my KK to the back yard. Funny how the offer of some cash can move mountains of red tape! Dennis (who was in constant contact through out the two day ordeal) had suggested an approach his dad recently used to get HIS new KK around the side yard. So me and my soon to be cash richer driver played leapfrog with pieces of plywood and got the KK to within a couple of feet of the deck. Four strong dudes from who'd helped us with last years' remodel did the rest. Bravo to the Chef (read: Dennis) as the fit and finish of the KK is off the charts. Could not be happier. Other than a couple of TIG weld issues with the middle grill (Dennis is already on sending me a new one) she survived the cruise in fine shape. Question - do any of you guys cover your KK from the elements. Never seen a photo of one covered...just wondering. Also - Does everyone out there leave the tru temp thermometer in and exposed to the sun and elements at all times? Guess both questions are related. Thanks to all for the advice...first cook is scheduled for Wed. this week!
  12. this just in - they are coming back tomorrow morning with an appropriate truck. They say w/ lift gate and hand truck...so that gets me to the garage anyway. Gotta go eat some Wheaties now, then call some of my 'larger' friends.
  13. 8:05 am 7/26 - the Truck has just arrived! WITH NO WAY OF GETTING THE CRATE OFF OF THE TRUCK No lift gate, no hand truck...did they really think most homeowners keep a forklift in the garage or have 6 NFL lineman over for breakfast? Ordered in March...this forum keeps you going 'till'...got 30lbs. of lump yesterday...cleared a path through the garage...then watched the truck drive away. OUCH Thanks for letting me vent gang...more to come.
  14. Good point J...how bout the first prototype for the A bomb?
  15. Looks like something used to sterilize medical instruments...or make beer. LOL
  16. Okay - ProCom on the way and just got a call from the trucking Co. The new baby will be her tomorrow morning...YES! Just hoping the truckers are willing to move 660# further than than the curb So go ahead an assume I'll be petting it all afternoon.
  17. So when not in use you take the Guru off and plug the inducer hole with something? Do I have that right?
  18. I think I'm gonna go for the Guru J....heck, I've gone THIS far w/ the investment so why stop now? So when they say 'line of sight' is that unobstructed? In other words, I assume the remote works in the house say waaaay over in the bedroom and through walls to tell me what's going on right? I'm thinking the Boston Butt w/ a dry rub...but again, you guys say not to worry about some sort of a 'break in fire'?
  19. Well - I thought I was picking it up...but it appears Dennis kindly arranged for a trucking company to "drop it off" Considering the Bill Of Lading from the trucking Co. says "660 lbs." in one of the little boxes - WOO HOO
  20. Supposed to be delivered tomorrow - FINALLY So what does the collective mind share suggest for the newbie's 'first cook'? And should I burn a fire or two to get that 'smell' out I've read on other threads? Oh - and thanks to all for bearing with my tedious posts during the 'gestation' period.
  21. Dennis - I tried the number you left on my VM yesterday and got someone else (must have transposed a number). Please try me again. tks!
  22. So just a 'straight inducer tube'...I suspect the good folks at Guru know of the KK and it's needs? Thanks guys
  23. WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! How's THAT for timing. I'm all ears Dennis and will await your call.
