  1. Good news, bbqguru can send 2 units with USPS for $53 (plus $44 for each fan). The $53 is the flat fee for shipping 1 or 2 units - so I’ve asked whether I can get a 3rd for that price in case anyone else Westside would like IN on the order. Tangles let me know if you’d still like one at that more morally acceptable price !! Bonfire want a spare ;-)  ?

    Yep. Count me in.

He runs the store out of his home, he’s got a really nice selection of fuels / rubs / smoking wood and all sorts of other goodies.

My team is called Boreshank Redemption, we won grand champion in the 2015 smokin in the city Comp and have had some good results since in other comps. The other guys are competing this weekend in chidlow.

We’re pretty spread out in terms of geography, our furthest north members are in Yanchep and our furthest south member lives in Rockingham and the rest of us are in between.

That's great stuff. Yeah, I need to go to one of these comps. My weekends are usually running around with kids sports but have been wanting to get out to one of the local comps.

Cool - re:shop. Will jump online and purchase a couple of things. Need to support the locals...

Oh right. I have been meaning to visit that store. I haven't been to that one yet.

Good to know. Can I ask which BBQ team you in Alimac? I couldn't make the the last comp. Will have to look out for the next one.

That’s the one. Interesting on the larger lump, that’s meant to get better air flow which might have something to do with the slightly unstable cook I had the other week. Will give it a crack

Yeah, I was using heatbeads on the bottom of the basket and topping up with Mallee. I found that to give higher temps quickly. Nowddays, I just use Heatbeads. I do pizza cooks and it's fine with Heatbeads. Full basket and let it soak. I get high temps doing it like that

Lucky I put my cover on this morning.. pouring with rain right now.

    The waiting begins.............

Goes quick... pretty sure mine was shipped in less than a week after the pebbles were confirmed. The shipping was quick.... Dennis has his crew operating like a well oiled machine

    Ohhhh ! Got it. Phew.

I’m in Wembley, not as hilarious. I’ve been getting my mallee charcoal from a bbq place in Ossie Park. Fella there reckons the Mallee stuff is the best, low dust, local, sustainable etc however also mentioned the guy who cooks it is moving property and there may be a break in availability if his stores run down before he kicks off again - might have to go into Nuclear Bunker buying. Or try the suggestions here.

Oh, I was getting Mallee from Outdoor Chef in ossie park too. Again, the Heatbeads are much bigger lump.

I am in City Beach - down the road from you.

Wow, had no idea that heat beads were an option. For some reason I thought it wasn’t considered legit for Kamado cooking. Don’t know where I got that from. How does it compare flavour wise to food ? What’s the main advantage ?

Bonfire told me that you are near me Steve. Innaloo Bunnings stocks Heatbeads Lump Charcoal.... I found them great. I did also try the Hestons B lump charcoal - also from Bunnings. That was okay too but I Heatbeads are a bit cheaper

For the non Perth people, Innaloo is a suburb in Perth. So is Cockburn..... jokes galore about these 2 suburbs

Yeah - thanks for the heatbeads tip. That's all I use nowdays. I was using gidgee but found the lumps small. That said, bonfire said that you can ask Ralph to get bigger lumps.

Heatbeads from Bunnings is convenient. Not so much on my wallet as I seem to walk out with all sorts of stuff when I go to Bunnings....

  9. In general, briskets take longer to cook than pork butts, as a reference point. Actual time depends on cooking temp and size of cut (whole packer cut, or just the point or flat). A whole packer cut cooked indirect at 275F generally takes 12 - 14 hours. If you drop the temp down to 225F add on another couple of hours. A point or flat, knock a couple of hours off those times. YMMV

Have had to read about points and flats.... I am getting there

  10. This was only 3kgs took only 5 and a bit hours .then another couple for the burnt ends .I thought it would take longer but being so small it just cruised along that's why I made burnt ends had some spare time .as the kgs rise so does the cooking time

    That’s quick. Might do a 5kg one

  11. I wouldn't bite with that shipping price either. Do you know the shipping weight? I've shipped about 10 lbs of sauces/rubs/spices to Aussie in Perth for half that price USPS! If you really want one, buy it but have it shipped to one of us here in the states and have us mail it to you instead. I suspect it will be a whole lot cheaper!!

So very generous Tony. We get the Australia tax.... basically pay more for everything

  12. Holy Moses. Ordered the fireboard tonight and went to get the fan and got the shock of my life (well almost). Over $100 for shipping a $44 fan !!! Might have to wait until someone goes to the US for work. Ouch, I’m not paying that on moral grounds ... well... sort of

Perhaps we can go halves on shipping. Might contact my relatives in the US and see if they can forward it to Perth. Otherwise may take up the offer from Tony

The Fireboard got here in 1 week. Was fast

  13. It's really awesome how Perth has embrassed the charcoal low n slow style of BBQ .the kj's are doing the rounds and the egg is coming to town but predominantly it's the webber and the stick burner and the odd pellet smoker .KK has had a good run lately .seen this new player in the market not tried it but love the packaging .1b7b41c491e7d44b683639e5d3c39195.jpg

Yep.... it’s crazy. That’s what stopped me too.

Fireboard ship via ups. The guru guys use dhl I think and that’s why it’s more expensive.

  15. I will Aussie. on Amazon it has a 4.1 star rating from over 700 reviews? They say it’s a flavor you love to hate lol

Hahaha, the Australian government gives out citizen certificates to anyone that can consume a standard jar in a day. Give it a shot.
I am surprised they haven’t kicked me out for not liking vegemite.

  16.
I have the Fireboard and I bought the pit viper fan for KK compatibility.  I can confirm it works, although they gave me the "Void the Warranty" song and dance as well when I inquired...  Haven't used it with my KK yet, but another reason I chose it was that I could get adapters for all my various kamado's that would work with the pit viper fan.  I really wasn't sure how things would work with the square ported fan that Fireboard is offering as far as that goes.  I have an Akorn Jr, Vision Classic B and Kamado Joe Big Joe all of which I can use that fan with (with adapters).  Didn't see if they had one for the mini BGE because.... well that just seems like it would be silly.  lol.

Thanks for that. Appreciate the feedback

  17. I think I’m going to go the same way with the Guru in combination probably with fireboard.
I’m going to go the same way with the Guru in combination probably with fireboard.
My only hesitation is all the comments on here around not needing a fan. I realise that the Komodo is generally very stable, but I did find some variation, particularly rising of temps unexpectedly during the low and slow (275 up to nearly 350) which if I wasn’t home when it happened I think would have ended badly .... alternatively I’m over thinking it and it wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference.
I’m going to get one anyway, why should kids get all the toys !!!!

It looks like the guru pit viper fan medium is on sale. But shipping price is expensive.
Let me know how you go.
I would recommend the Fireboard as a thermometer. Well made. I got some comp temp probes which are straight- figure they would be easier to put through the kk temp probe holes. I also got the weather resistant case. Good luck. Mine only took a week to get to Perth. You will also have to get the fan control cable.

  19. Whew glad thats the case, am having the same problem with the Flameboss 300, their fan is a no go on the KK, i emailed them (Flameboss), they wrote back saying they are working on a prototype  for the KK (there you go Dennis) so i just ordered one yesterday (medium pit viper fan) from the Guru boys, don't know how many times i'll get it out to use...but at least its there to use if i ever need to.
I was using it one day with an ex of mine (BJoe) while waiting at the dentist, monitoring some pork ribs, worked a treat, aint technology grand...until the next solar flare anyways

Let me know how you go. I see the guru fan is on sale at the moment.
