  1. Re: Tel-Tru thermometers... Now Standard!

Starting June 1st All Deluxe and Supreme models will come standard with a Tel-Tru thermometer' date=' http://www.teltru.com

You and your Komodo deserve the best. Tel-Tru is a World-Class temperature instrument not one of the cheapo made in China thermometers that come with lesser ceramics

Your Komodo will use a 5" long stem thermometer, model LT225R,

You may specify the 150º to 750º  or 200º to 1000º model

  3. Re: heavy

    Sweet Kamado! Great photos.

How did you get it off the back of the pick up truck?

    ahhh, that was fun :)

I uncrated the top portion of the crate, took the lid off, took the stuff out from inside, put the crate back together..wow that was a decrease in weigth itself). I then took two 6ft lengths of 2x4 and nailed/screwd one at the front of the crate, and another at the back of the crate...both at truck bed rail height. I then took two ratchet straps and criss crossed them under the crate and attached the other end to the 2x4 section sticking out (this is very important as crates should be lifted from the BOTTOM...not the sides. Now I had 4 long handles sticking out to the side of the truck. I then got 3 other guys and my wife. The 3 others and myself lifted the unit using the 2x4's while my wife drove the truck out from under it :)

  4. Here she is!!!!

Some of you know that I didn't want to open the crate since I will be moving soon and thought the legs may break off during the move (heard stories about the other K). Well...I was getting antsy (and a bit of pear pressure from some of you!!) to use it, so a call to Dennis was in order. He explained that the legs are reinforced with rebar and that I shouldn't worry about them splitting/breaking off :) So here she goes!!!...

Most pics are on my website ...will take more as it gets used..here are few samples :) Can't open the top yet, missing 6 bolts...one call to Dennis and they are on their way.

Here she is on her first day home:

    dscf0101.jpg

Here's where I used a circular saw to just rip down the sides of the crate for a quick open, without hassling to use a prybar and hammer...plus very little nails sticking out this way

    dscf0115.jpg

    dscf0118.jpg

Here's a good size comparison. That toolchest is 5'3" tall.

    dscf0123.jpg

Here's just an artsy fartsy angle shot (with better lighting) with two of my most beloved toys..tools and grill. :) ...hmmm, possibly new Avitar photo :)

    dscf0121.jpg

To allow me (wife no good at this stuff...and too late to call neighbors) to roll the unit off the crate, I hammered out one side of the pallet legs and created a 'ramp' of sorts to carefully slide the unit down. Be careful, the center block tends to slide with it :)

later..time for bed so that I can start dreaming of my first use this weekend!!!

  5. really! you've had it for A WEEK and no pics!!! i've seen the webpage' date=' man! you know your way around a camera! please, PLEASE tell me you've cooked on it since receiving it. not getting something on the grill the day you get it in is like making your bride sleep on the couch on your wedding night!!![/quote']

The only pics I took of it is it sitting in the back of my wife's pickup...still in it's crate :)

...I REALLY want to use it...but we are planning a move to CO in the next few months and kinda want to keep it crated up...of course, I can probably just pop the top off the crate and start grilling like it is ..hmmmmmm

work calls....I'll try to remember to post pics after a bit. good chance there will be a link to my pics from my website...kumar.cruiezer.net when I"m done. Rather than hijacking this thread too awfully badly, I'll update my original thread where I mentioned that I ordered it :)

  6. Re: Post pics of your repair

Our damage is very similar and from Tony's post looks like his crate failed in the same way but he teetered the other way and the less sturdy nose was spared. I need some step by step directions on the repair as I am unskilled labor.

Dennis, looks like a crating adjustment is in order.

She sure is beautiful..keep the pictures coming..(ok I need to post some)

I received my OTB last week. I talked to Dennis about the neck piece popping out (did on mine too, but luckily no tile damage). I think it's a product of the black foam pad compressing during shippment...thus with the twisting of the crate creates enough of a gap to pop the neck out. Only issue besides that one with my delivery was that my OTB was missing 3 bolts on the lid (a new step in QC coming per Dennis)...not major bolts..as 2 were already there and holding the lid on just fine. Great experience overall...Dennis is the man!

now let's get that lump charcoal vaccuumed up and start the shipping!

  7. Re: Teak flooring..

When it was available in the states it used to retail for $9-12.00. The actor John Malkovich did 2 houses with it, including the famous one in France.

Now I pretty much get my jobs from Interior designers and architects for hotel work, condo's etc.

All my textured floors are finished with an in the wood polymerized tung oil finish that's repairable unlike polyurethane.

If anyone is interested drop me a line, if I’m not booked solid, I'll be able to give you commercial ex-factory pricing

There is a partially finished web site www.HandHewnFloors.com

I'm currently searching for a home in the greater Denver area...I will definitly keep this in mind...it looks really nice...I assume your price was per square foot?

  8. Re: Thanks for the comprehensive answer.

actually, more like 188. the top can come off...dennis provides a 19mm socket to unhook the spring lid springk

Actually that weight range did not include the top, i.e., that 253-278 range is for the main body and the base and wheels.

    oops...i knew I posted to quickly ;)

  9. Re: Thanks for the comprehensive answer.

Hmm... so the biggest chunk to get up the steps at any one time is 253 or 278lbs depending on the model. That's almost manageable. :)

  10. Re: 2 more construction questions

Still seeing if the base can be lightened further for going up stairs:

Does the firebox come out (easily... not permenantly like Porkchop's Mexi-K :( ) If so, is there a substantial weight saving... 20+ lbs or so?

Does the stand/wheels come off? I seem to remember seeing this discussed but I couldn't find the post.

    TIA

I remember seeing the post, but taking the base of takes some doing...it's not super hard, but probably not needed. the KK's come with handy carrying ropes...so a few buddies and you shoudl be able to carry it.

  11. Re: CNC laser cut name in plate

I just picked up a sample of stainless which sits under the lower latch assembly which is under the handle.

I had them cut Komodo on the left and Kamado on the right..

My idea was to later fill the letters with grout.

    Time to brand the cookers...

Yes photos are on the way...

what would be cool is for you to offer your current owners a bolt on badge when you finalize the design ;) ... free of course :o

  12. Re: Packaging Suggestion

    Dennis

I have previously worked in a situation where they had very delicate parts. We used an expandable foam to package them and it was extremely effective. I never heard of anything being broken using that foam. Although your product is bigger and heavier they have different density levels. You hook up a couple of tanks and the chemicals mix and you have a hose and nozzle that dispenses the foam which immediately expands and after a few minutes sets. I don!t know how anything protected by the foam would be damaged unless the whole thing was smashed. It would seem to be foolproof as they say. It would also be great if you had to ship out a firebox or something else. You put a piece of plastic in the box and add some foam and let it rise a little and put the part in and then cover it with plastic and add more foam on the top of it close up the box and you are all set. The foam is hot when dispensed. I think it would definitely be worth looking into if it was reasonably available to you.

I think I've seen something like this at the UPS distro center. it was really cool. Basically they pulled a random length of plastic bag from this machine, once it was at length/size they wanted they would push a button, it would then seal the other end of the bag, insert the chemical in liquid form, then they would quickly pack my box with it, and VOILA...the foam expanded inside the trash bag to hug my part perfectly. Not sure the technical details, and i'm sure I have part of it wrong, but it's the general idea :)

  13. Wow, mfg was quick!

I emailed Dennis last nite to see if you he could take some pics of my OTB being manufactured, but he said that it was already done and ready for packing. Said he would get some pics of it in the crate before it leaves. Folks ,this is only 6 days after I ordered the unit!!!...that is quick. Great service so far!!

will keep you posted once it arrives (hopefully in one piece).

Dennis, are you using the new packing techniques mentioned somewhere on this board?

    K

  14. Well after Dennis so thoughtfully replied to all my bazillion emails, after the web forum went down and back up, and after the follow up support from Dennis, I now am the FUTURE proud owner of a Supreme OTB. Placed the order today...will post pics when it arrives :)

  15. Theo' date=' great to hear that you were pleased and that I didn't steer you wrong! :D I (and the rest of the readers) will be eager to hear how the cooking goes![/quote']

    First: Theo Lotz

Dude, I went through almost exactly the same pre-ordering scenerio you did...from the fanatics at Mexi to this forum by accident! I've officially placed my oder for a Supreme OTB today :) Can't wait to post my results!

    ...TheNakedWhiz...please check your PM.

    Thanks!

  16. Come on folks' date=' bite the bullet, which is what I did. At the very least, you will have what you were originally expecting, and you won't have to ever deal with that other company again. :D[/quote']

I was about to buy the mexi version a few days ago. Called them a few times, got the typical answers, then did one last search online. Came up with this place...now I'm in talks with Dennis on buying one of his stock units. If the deal works out I'll soon be the new owner of an OTB as well :)

    K (really, it's my first initial ;)
