Searing on the KK

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've seen some posts about the lower 'sear' grill. How hot can that get vs the main grill area? Is it easy to grill on? It seems kind of awkward to reach down into the grill to flip the meat. Can you sear just as easily on the main grill?

Well, I can't speak from experience with this particular cooker but if the dome temp is 700 degrees the grill temp will likely be hotter than that.

With my old Kamado I never had an issue with searing at the top. Having said that I've never tried searing at a lower level but would imagine you'd need some long tongs and a good heat resistant glove.

Just my opinion, but it is not that you cannot sear on the top grill, it just takes a lot less charcoal and time to sear on grill directly above the coals verses 12 -18 inches away.

Jason is correct you can sear on the main grill it just takes longer and uses more fuel. I have had my main grill up to 700 degrees which is plenty hot enough to sear.
