  1. Thanks folks!

I want to go and look at the Lodge skillet and see if it fits...this was just about 1-2 cm's too big, so close and yet...

Maybe we can grind off that silly little millimeter or two......be a shame to give up that nice CI real estate on the new KK

  2. Thanks Tony and Charles for the updated information.

Unfortunately I don't have the tools to cut it and even if I did, I'm about as handy as.....well, lets just say I'm not at all handy!!  Looks like I'll give this one a pass for now.

Rak,  Just bought a new cut-off grinder tool............let me know when you need/want a deflector and I'll chop one up for you!!!!

  3. Although as I think about it, with a cover on the grill, I think it's much less of an issue as there is a barrier from the cold.

Did you order a heated cover from Dennis???? (Oh man....Bosco would be mad if you did )   I'm thinking the cover will be the same temp as the outside air and offer little temp protection to the thermometer.   Moisture protection....yes, but I would still bring in the thermometer in on super cold nights to protect it's calibration.

Gee.........I thought all Northern KK owners kept their beloved cooker in a heated garage like Mac the 19" TT...................Ha!!!!!!

  4. PRippley,  That was a sweet deal and it looks like a decent little cooker.  Like the wood side shelves!!!

We do a lot of camping and cooking on the boat.  We have used a Weber Q with the 1# propane cylinders, works great but it has a good size foot print and can be hard to store at times. Not a good smoker or low & slow grill.

Bought a Weber Char Q before they stopped making them.  It can burn lump charcoal and is a decent smoker.  You can cook direct & indirect.... but low & slow is out of the question. Again it has a big foot print for storage.

Tried the Cook Air Wood Fired Grill also.  Small & compact, great for searing and getting some wood smoke but that is about it.

Then we tried the Cobb Grill .  It is about the same size as your new Vision P.  It is the most versatile camping grill we have.  Small foot print, light weight, can grill & smoke, uses a small amount of charcoal (can use CoCo Char but not lump - melted the plastic ring), you can do a limited low & slow by controlling the amount charcoal (but needs to be replenished).

When the Joe Jr. came out, I bought one of those to take camping.  Does a nice job (13.5" grate) but is expensive and a little heavy to be carrying down the catwalks. When we are not traveling very far, we sometimes throw it on the front of the boat and tie it down but never bring it into the boat to store away.

Anyway the point I'm getting at, is...............when camping and when you don't have a huge amount of space.....I'm not sure there is one perfect grill.  Lord knows, we have tried!!!

Your little Vision may not be big but it will do almost everything you might desire...just on a smaller scale.  On the similar sized Cobb, we have figured out how to cook in shifts, bought & modified cooking racks, bought special tools to add charcoal, small tins for heat deflectors, even have a special basket for cooking shrimp & scallops, etc.  Most of it fits into its carrying case and one small box.

I'm guessing by the time your done experimenting with your Kub, it going to end up being your best camping grill!!!!   Don't give up on it.

  5. +15F, that's a bloody heat wave compared to here right now! You sure that you want to visit in early April? We might still have snow!

I do remember the crazy cold weather in Iowa....................please keep it there!  My memory still serves me well!!!!!!

  6. The only problem I have with the Guru forum is that there are so many posts & content on the site.......that if you don't check it a few times everyday, it is difficult to keep up with all the great information.

    I know.........wonderful problem to have!!!!!

  7. Most of the units have a gas burner option. It's a round burner that goes below the charcoal basket. Works great for a heat soak or pizza cook. The dual fuel is completely different. The burners go above the charcoal basket and are much larger for even heat.

I'm beginning to see the light................ :glasses3:

  8. From reading about Dual-Fuel KK's on the website, I think that Dual-Fuel is only available on the 21" & 23" KK's. It may be that the 32" cooker can be modified to accept the Dual-Fuel box, but there isn't any indication that it has been done previously.

Thanks Geo....................see what happens when one assumes!!!  I need to do more research.

  9. egmiii,

Thank you for posting the reply to the questions (along with dealing with the sick kids).  When you have time, a couple more questions...........are you happy with the way the gas burner heat sinks the grill?   I believe you mentioned only using one burner.......could you describe the burner set up?

Thanks in advance.  Being a low & slow smoker type, one of my biggest concerns is the time it will take to heat sink a 32" or 42" in the cold weather (planning on cooking tonight in 15*F/-9*C)  .

  10. Hardest part is trying to figure out where to meet? How far are folks willing to travel?

That is a tough question......then add the "when do we do it"??????  I wonder how many guest rooms Dennis has in Indonesia???

Tony,  I'm hoping to be in Cedar Rapids on the 1st or 2nd of April.  If you are around, maybe my sister (who lives there) and I can meet up with you and yours????  Have a few beers (maybe a bourbon) and tell a few tall BBQ tales.   :occasion5:

  11. After seeing Bosco's 32" KK...............Old Monkey Arms here is having second thoughts about the new 42"KK..............might be just a little too big for my cooking style (weight for the deck also). .

The 32" is really a nice sized grill.  The cooking grid size and shape is excellent.  It is NOT too big.

One of the main reasons I purchased my two Primo kamado's was the oval shape and the flexibility.  From what I saw yesterday, the 32 provides most of those advantages plus all the additional KK features & quality.

Crap...............now I have to fly to Indonesia to visit Dennis and see the new 42" KK.......unless Bosco orders one next week

  12. Red Head Sue and I had the great honor of meeting Rak, Tinyfish and Bosco for lunch yesterday in Toronto....... and then traveling 30 minutes to see Bosco's double KK set-up in person!!!!!!

    I'm happy to report:

    - Rak looks great after his big scare.  Sue says he is movie star handsome. He is soooo excited about his new KK arriving this week, he could hardly sit still.

    - Tinyfish is a wonderful and truly interesting person.  This guy knows his stuff. It always amazes me how much knowledge our KK forum members have and share with others.  He even had ribs cooking back at home, while we were eating lunch.

    - Bosco is as crazy a BBQ nut as ever.  Back late Saturday night from a family vacation, both he & Tinyfish drive 30 minutes each way to meet us for lunch, after lunch he takes an hour to show us his super cool set-up at the house plus all the accessories, shares some smoking wood and then he has to finish unpacking and get to work at 6:00pm that same afternoon.

It was a great time.....many secrets shared........lots of humor.........tall stories told......good food.........and new friends made!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks from Sue and Jon for taking the time to meet with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. One of the times I was talking to Dennis, he explained that if you stand in the center of the 32 KK, almost anyone can reach out and touch either side of the grill.  The depth is also within the reach of most people.   He explained that even though a few people think that it might be too large/big for them, it really is very functional and friendly for anyone.

That's when I told him I had long monkey arms and asked him to make me an even larger KK for the cottage.
