Victorious Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago Hey KKers. We have a vacation home near Lake Tahoe and the area recently implemented a "burn ban" due to fire risk. This runs from mid-June through November (prime cooking months of course). What is banned? "Residential campfires/bonfires that burn anything other than gas. BBQ’s that burn solid fuel like charcoal briquettes, wood or lump charcoal including the Big Green Egg type." I was hoping this was a one-time ban, but it looks like it will be every year because dumb-dumbs don't know how to demonstrate basic safety protocol. "Truckee Fire District has experienced a number of escaped fires caused by improper charcoal ash disposal and campfires." So my ask of you is... what might some alternatives be? Can the KK be converted to gas or pellet (which seems risky and silly)? Is there someone in a non-fire prone area of Northern California interested in purchasing a KK? Should I Just try to cook in the off-season months? Luckily we have another KK in our primary home in San Francisco. Here is the info on the burn ban: https://www.truckeefire.org/burnban
Syzygies Posted 9 minutes ago Report Posted 9 minutes ago I have the gas burner assembly, which can turn the KK into an oven. Combine this with the smoke generator, and I'm sure you can create some decent BBQ.
Tyrus Posted 6 minutes ago Report Posted 6 minutes ago My 23 KK bought in 2017 had 3 screw inserts in the base to accept the gas insert. If I were looking at these regs and lived where you were, well I just might be calling Dennis for advice...why not. Too bad, the KK is probably the safest Q to operate with lump for many reasons, one of which you could start the coals with the lid closed using a fiberous firestarter and everything is self contained. Wait a while, you know how things work, you toss out something because you don't need it or the rules have changed, then everything changes back again and your kicking yourself. See how the gas option works, forget any idea surrounding pellets.
