TelTru thermometer springy - what's it for?

The thermometer comes with a metal springy thing on the probe. I'm not sure what this is for. Can I just take it off and stick the thermometer through the hole until the back face of the dial rests on the tile?

It's to hold the thermometer to the lip of a pot. It will hold your thermometer to your kk, but a lot of us don't so we can't easily remove the thermometer when doing high temp cooks.
