  1. My brand new 23" Ultimate KK arrived on Thursday, and my son Dan, came over after work to help move it. The delivery driver was kind enough to set the KK just outside the entry door. While waiting for Dan to get here, I removed the screws that hold the pallet cover to the pallet. While the cover isn't heavy, it is awkward to lift by myself, so at that point, I waited for Dan to get here. Once he arrived, it only took a few minutes to uncrate the KK, move it into & through the house, and onto the back patio. The process was very easy... There is one 4" step up at the front entry to the house, and another 4" step down to the patio. Here's the KK as delivered to the front door. I asked the driver to place it that close so we could go directly from the pallet through the front door. The KK was through the front door in a flash! I has has two partial sheets of 3/4" plywood. Thought we'd need it to protect the tile floor, but about mid-way thorough the house, we decided to just push it without the plywood. We didn't experience any problems doing it that way. Since we didn't have to lift the KK, we had to find another use for the ropes... Once we were finished clowning around, it was an easy matter to push the KK through the back door, and down the ramp to the patio. The KK in position on the patio. Isn't she a beauty! The he move went EXTREMELY smoothly, and only took perhaps 15-minutes. I couldn't be more pleased!

  2. I'm not going to be able to do the burn in until this weekend, but I couldn't resist so I rolled it outside and cooked some burgers on it... I followed a post Bosco made about vent settings and it was right on. I lit 1 spot of lump with my mapp torch, bottom vent halfway open, top vent open 3 turns. It got up to 300 fairly quick and I closed the bottom to 1/4 open and the top to 1 turn open. Within 20 min or so she was parked at 350. I opened the top just a little more and I was at 375. Temp control on these cookers is a thing of beauty. The burgers were just simple cheese burgers with a little dizzy pigs, but they came out great!! Soo juicy!! Didn't get any pics of them sorry...

  4. I'm having some work done in the kitchen tomorrow and thought I'd make some burgers for the carpenter. ;);) I also made some round perfectly melting cheese slices. Hope fully tomorrow I'll get a pix of everything put together but I'm not sure that's going to happen. I'll try. Burgers are done and they are so tender. How tender you ask, dropped one while flipping and it fell apart. Guess that one is mine.

  5. My 23 was delivered today and I couldn't be more happy!!! I had the driver drop it off in my detached garage. We just moved in this house a month ago and my garages are still a mess. These pics were taken from my phone so not the best quality These Tera Blue tiles are amazing up close!! Now I just need to recruit some help and get this baby on my deck!! The bad news is that we are supposed to get 4-5 inches of rain over the next couple days.

  7. How cruel can the world get?!? You order a KK and kick the bucket before you even get to light a fire in the thing Note to my family: If this should ever happen to me, i expect you to shove my body into that grill and invite everyone over for a BBQ. Just be sure not to get the grills mixed up when its time to eat!

  9. Hello everyone I am eagerly awaiting my Speckled Black 23" KK. It's quite possibly the most famous un-owned KK in the history of KKs! http://komodokamadoforum.com/topic/6016-crazy-bent-what-happened-here/ A long story about how this all came to be below if you are interested. This wasn't something I ever expected I'd do. I did a ton of research on every kamado I could find on the Internet before jumping in and buying a Kamado Joe Classic. I wanted the Big Joe, but when I saw it in person, I thought it was too big for my family (me, my wife, and her 3 young adult daughters - all of whom will be leaving the nest in the next 3 years or so). That entire process was probably 6 - 8 months. I was never really a fan of the way the KKs looked, and, when I saw the price, I backed away. Not that I didn't think they were 'worth' it, it was just more than I wanted to spend. I really thought that KJ would be the last grill I ever owned, and never would have believed that I would jump up to a KK. That all changed a few weeks ago due to an odd series of events. Bosco had posted the Project Smoke pictures over on the Guru and I noticed that the wheel was bent on one of the units. It was clearly from being manhandled across grass and rough terrain on the set. I made a quick post (tongue-in-cheek) asking if it would be sold as 'scratch and dent'. I never indented to suggest that I wanted it. ckreef saw my post and PMd me and said if I was interested, to call Dennis as he was probably selling the 2 KKs as demo units and deals are rare, so this is a good chance to get one. I replied that I wasn't really that interested... and I wasn't... but said I might give Dennis a call just to see what deal could be made. About a week later, I realized that I had clicked on those pictures and the KK site over and over and over... I was devouring all of the information about KKs that I could find. So, I sent Dennis a quick email asking if those grills were available and, if so, what was the price - particularly of the 19" Table Top with the bent leg - figuring that would be the best to deal on. And I told myself, "If I can get a good deal, I'll take it. If not, I'm perfectly fine with what I have. I have nothing to lose by asking." About 10 minutes later, I was outside cleaning my KJ and my wife came out with my phone and said I was getting a call from Los Angeles. It's my work phone and I get a lot of random calls, I don't know anyone in LA, so I said to just ignore it. When I looked later, there was a voicemail from Dennis! He said I should give him a call. This was on Saturday afternoon. He also replied in an email that the 32" was sold, but that the other two hadn't been sold yet. He also tried calling me on Sunday, but I missed that call. I called him Monday morning when I got to work. He told me that the other two grills had been spoken for, so I figured that was the end of that... but no! He said he might be able to do something for me. He said he had a 23" Speckled Black KK that was in Georgia somewhere that had a minor issue that needed repaired. And he explained everything that the thread linked above talked about. After a few minutes, he said that it was ckreef that was fixing up the grill. Again, at this point, I wasn't really sure this was what I wanted to do - it's a lot of money for something that I don't really need (I know, I know... "Need" isn't really the point here;) ). I said I'd have to talk to my wife and I'd get back to him. I reached out to ckreef to tell him about that conversation and ask more about the repaired KK. He assured me that the grill was as good as new and even graciously offered to open up the Bistro so I could come look at it - and check out his KKs. We were in the process of trying to find a day that worked best for us. We are about 3 hours away from each other. He also said, and get this, that he would deliver the KK and help me get it set up! chreef took some extra pictures of the grill to send me and answered any questions I had. I also talked a bosco for a while one night and he was very helpful answering my questions - it was a good perspective to hear from someone new in the KK game. I talked to my wife, who is always super supportive, and after a few days of some back and forth, she said to go for it. I'm the one that has the issues spending the money, she's always fine with me spending on things I want to do. I'm the one that has to go to 10 stores to find a belt that I like... then when I get it, I say, "I probably shoulda got that other one instead..." lol I have to admit that a part of me wanted her to say "No" so that I didn't have to worry about making the decision. I called Dennis the next morning to grab up the grill. 5 days had elapsed from when I sent that initial email to Dennis. Do I also have the title of Fastest Decision to Buy? Now I am just waiting to find a date that works for me, ckreef, and a few helpers so that we can drag this thing to my back yard.

  10. Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I really appreciate the wealth of your experience. Some time ago, I suggested to Miss Jean that we should get a SV cooker. To-date, I haven't gotten her past the fear of the unknown. Will keep working on it. For now, I won't be able to try those recipes. I've decided to try the KK recipes one-at-a-time. Tonight, I tried the one suggested by Bgrant3406. Will try the others on future cooks. Here are my thoughts about tonight's cook... Had difficulty getting temperature up to 600*. Had full basket of RO, hand loaded. I'm thinking that either I was just impatient, or I should have made sure to get some large lump at the bottom. Will do better next time. Shut it down at 550*, and did the approximate 4-minute cycles. Cooker cooled off quickly, and I had to leave the chicken on a lot longer than the 12 minutes that Bruce had suggested. This left the chicken a bit dry, but still good. Also tried asparagus in ci pan with EVOO, onions, and garlic. That turned out WONDERFUL! Also tried some asparagus directly on the grate. That was good, but not like the spears cooked on ci. I'll try that recipe again with the things I've learned. Before you ask, here's the visual evidence. :>) I'm anxious to try the other recipes that were suggested. Looks like a lot of chicken meals at Geo's house in the next couple weeks. ;>)

  11. Global Moderators 13,240 posts 0 warning points LocationOntario Canada Grill:Kamado Joe Posted Today, 02:23 PM I had the day off and figured I would give the KKs a cleaning today. They have been covered but the they are dirty. I find that the tile darkens as the smoke exits the upper damper. The tiles appear to deepen brown. But obviously grease and smoke. It was recommended that I used the zapp 505 from Home Depot. I was in the states last week with Rak and grabbed a bottle. Wiped the exterior down and had some white residue from the burn in on the grout so wiped it all down with the 505. This stuff cuts through the grease!!!!!!! Wiped it all down then hit it with liquid car wax spray. Buffed with a rag and man they look shiny and new. This set up is so nice to look at. Sorry for the redundant shot but the shine from the wax was worthy of a picture!! Wifey just gave her blessing for a gazebo so I will be placing order soon. Can't wait to get my outdoor area set up for the spring!!!
