  5. While waiting from my KK 23†to make its way to my house, a thought occurred to me. If I’m grilling something relatively straightforward, like burgers for the kids, I need to figure out what to do with the other stuff that came with my grill that I’m not using at the time. That adds up to two grill grids, the heat deflector, the drip pan, and the baking stone. I am happy that the KK grills come with so much standard equipment, but as the title says, how do you all store the parts that come with your KK grill? I also know that when the grill is not in use, I can store a lot of that stuff in the grill itself, but knowing myself, unloading the grill every time I want to use it would get old fast. I’d rather have a dedicated storage system of some sort. I know there’s the hook that you can attach to the side of the KK grill to hang the grids that you aren’t using, but in my case I ordered the two side tables, so that’s probably not a realistic option. And in any case, that still leaves the heat deflector, drip pan, and baking stone. Any suggestions, especially pictures of what you all do would be greatly appreciated. I’m reasonably adept at woodworking, so building a storage rack of some sort is a possibility, but I could use design ideas.
  6. There’s probably something to that. The folks that like to cook pizza in their kamado grills often put the pizza up high to help the crust get crisp.

  8. I just keep in mind that grilling this fall will be so much fun, compared to not being able to grill all summer after my old grill died. Although I do think that this whole experience has been the very definition of “Good things come to those who wait.â€
  9. I ordered the 23" baking stone when I ordered my grill. The best thing is to contact Dennis. I used the online chat thing on the KK website, and he called me back on my phone, and it was easy to hammer out the details of my order.
  10. Getting closer! Dennis sent me a note that the container with my grill made it to the Port of Los Angeles and cleared inspection. That was the good news. The bad news is this happened: A fire broke out at the Port of Los Angeles. Luckily, it was contained without too much damage or any loss of life, but this will delay the grill getting to Dennis’s warehouse. Still, the way I look at it, I went 11 weeks from June until August after placing an order for another kamado grill without knowing where it was or when I might expect to receive it. And even when I ultimately cancelled that order, I still didn't have a delivery date of any kind. So comparatively speaking, I'm still way ahead, even with the port fire.

  13. Many rib places in the Chicago area boil ribs before smoking them. Some people say it's a result of the Eastern European immigrant population influencing BBQ practices that came up to Chicago from the African American migration from the Deep South. Some people think that boiling ribs is heresy. They need to get a life. If you can change the rubs and the sauces, why can't there be variations on cooking technique?

  17. Tony, by “my library†do you mean directly from your computer? The picture you’re posting is 106 KB, not 2.5 MB. Maybe you could double check the size of the picture on your computer.
  18. I think I figured out the issue. It may be that the photos that you are uploading are too big for the KK forum to handle. I don’t have any insight into how eBay works, but I’m sure that eBay has good software on their end that can accept a large picture and scale it down for displaying in an auction listing. The fact that you can upload photos to eBay, but not to the KK forum regardless of which computer you use indicates that it’s not a problem on your end. I just did an experiment. I tried to upload a full resolution picture off of my camera that was 5.6 MB and 4896 x 3264 pixels big. I tried both the advanced uploader and the basic uploader, and neither one worked. I’m using a Mac. I then took my photo and downsized it to 1200 x 800 pixels, which brought it down to 0.46 MB (461 KB), and it uploaded without problems. You don’t say what kind of camera you have, but I bet the photos you have are at least 2-3 MB. Try taking one of your photos, make a copy of it, and use your computer to downsize the resolution of the copy of your photo so that the photo is about 0.5 MB (500KB). Someone else will have to guide you through that process, since I don’t use Windows. But I’m sure there’s a utility program that came with your computer that will be able to do this. Then try to upload the smaller picture and see if that works.
  19. I’m adding this picture of the 23†Ultimate that’s on its way to me as a test. Seems to work fine. Here are the steps that I used: 1. First, click on the “More Reply Options†button at the lower right corner of the “Reply to this topic†box. The “Reply to this topic†box is quick and easy, but you can’t easily add a picture from it. 2. Under “Attach Filesâ€, click the “Choose File†button. This will bring up a box where you can choose a photo from your computer to upload. Once you select your picture, click the “Choose†button. 3. Here’s where it gets a little tricky. Even though you’ve chosen your picture, you haven’t really uploaded it yet. Now you have to click the “Attach This File†button to put the picture into your post. 4. And you’re still not done yet. A little box will appear above the “Attach Files†area with a thumbnail of your picture. To the right it will say “Add to Postâ€. Click on that and something like [attachment=2172:23-ultimate-olive-and-gold-pebble-b-4870h-e-1408344600.jpg] will show up in the text box where you type. This is the code for the picture so it shows up nicely in the middle of the text. Hope this makes sense, and is of some help.

  21. Looks great! On a tangent: I’m assuming that your homemade frites are deep fried. If so, how do you go about deep frying? That’s something that I’m reluctant to do at home, because of the mess and corralling the oil.
  22. Welcome! If you have time, post a picture of your BB 32. I love seeing pictures of KK grills in their home environments, and I’m sure others here would be, too. One question out of curiosity: is it easy or hard to find the same cuts of meat suitable for barbecue in Japan that are available here in the U.S.? I’m Chinese, and I’m relatively sure that in China it’s not hard at all to buy pork at the grocery store, but buying a pork butt might be another issue, since using a whole pork butt doesn’t really come up in any Chinese dish that I’m familiar with. Likewise, there are some Chinese dishes that call for pork ribs, but the ribs are prepared much differently by the butcher than the pork ribs used for baby back ribs.
  23. Is there any issue with doing the heat soak without the grills and heat deflector? That way you could do the heat soak, then add wood where you want it after the heat soak is done, and then put the heat deflector and grills in place. I’ve seen a good number of kamado demonstration videos where the guy doing the cook did exactly that. The heat deflector and grills would also have to come up to temperature, but compared to the mass of the Komodo Kamado itself, I would think that this is a relatively minor issue.
