  1. Nope...no upper grill I thought about setting a brick in the center of the lower bracket, and then the heat shield on top of that. That should get me a little more clearance. Major vs Minor? Whats the difference? One uses a hammer and the other loosens the bolts first?!?! I had leakage from 2 to about 5 on mine, but after adjustment, it seems ok. I tightened the bands WAY tight, too. The bolts are bending and it looks like the 90 angle in the band itself is about to bend. Probably not bent, just flexing a little.
  2. I am thinking that my 15" heat shield, which came with my K is the source of some of my woes. I have noticed that the cracks in my base really open up when I use it. I think it doesnt leave enough room around the stone for heat to escape. There is about 1 to 1.5" around it, but I think it needs some more. In order to achieve 350 indirect in my Mexi-K, i need quite the raging furnace. All of that concentrated heat, and worse, the difference in heat between the firebox area and the rest of the cooker opens up some serious fault lines! I know I have seen some pics of the KK heat stone in place, but I cant find them. Anyone know where to look? I want to see it in the grill and compare the open area around it.
  3. #5 is a nice size Sanny, I have a #5 as well. Even with a family of 4, it has ample capacity. I am in the market for a bigger grill, and thats how I found my way here. I am considering the OTB KK. I love the innovations on this grill. I plan to keep the #5 (as long as it will last) so I can have the versatility of cooking at 2 different temps. Especially since the outdoor cooking seeason runs all here year in FL!
  4. Thanks for stopping by Sanny Feel free to speak freely on this forum We really are a friendly band of renegades!
  5. yeah... Well my grill still has tiles on it!
  6. And all of the rest are for curly!
  7. good looking ribs, Nator Pic 2 definitely shows some evidence of venting smoke at about the 4 o'clock area. Hopefully there is an easy adjustment - gotta be better than adjusting bands, right? I dont see how adjusting the spring will be enough, though. If you adjust the spring to remove all of the upward tension, then its no longer self opening...just spring assisted opening. Seems like the adjustment would need to be in the latch.
  8. man...that sounds like a long process! I am soooo trying to order one of these, but you never stop tinkering and improving! I could wait and get a rotisserie sent after the fact, but now I have to wait until shotgun fred fine tunes the guru port! You need a moratorium on development! Maybe save all of these improvements and have model years...like cars!
  9. Please clarify... Which components come standard as 3/8" Stainless? I was under the impression that only the meat hanger was 3/8 while everything else was 1/4? Also, I should take this opportunity to mention that my Kamado does indeed have 1/4" stainless grills. I had originally thought that they were larger size. Last night, I measured them...they look larger as a matter of scale since my mexi-K is a #5 (18" grill)
  10. I agree Close it down tight when you arent using it, and go with the flow. Eventually, you will roast something or even grill steaks, and then it will burn off. I just brush my grill and wipe it with oil before each cook. Whatever scrapes off is just additional smoke flavor Between cooks, keep it closed tight so it doesnt become a buffet for insects.
  11. Thats not a smokey joe... You turned it into a WSM!
  12. That's what I am talking about! Those look quite tasty, Dennis! It looks like you snuck a few pieces of tenderloin on there, too? It's only July 2nd over here, but I will be Q'ing some thighs to make pulled chicken on request from my son. Porkchop, I went to the store yesterday and got a beef shoulder...watch for pics later in the week.
  13. And for those comparing a K vs a KK This is prime example of the differences between the two companies. Here, Dennis is quite open with information - even citing the manufacturer, and sharing the composition of the materials he uses. Try posting a similar question on the Mexi-K forum, and not only will it be removed within hours, but you will be branded as an enemy, and likely banned. Give it a shot...post something similar, like this: RichardJ, You have always said that your material is proprietary and some sort of special slurry you put together. I have concerns about substances which may affect my long term health. Could you please clarify what is in your mix? Specifically, are there any asbestos containing compounds? Does it contain portland cement? Can you tell me the manufacturer of your M-64 repair coating, and provide its composition? If you post this, be prepared to create a new account, and possibly find a new IP address to post from And for my end of the bargain..once that certification comes from HW, I will personally post it on the same forum where the charge originated...along with the screen shot of the since deleted allegation, and RJs personal request for such certification.
  14. Re: Relax Spoken like a true mexi-K veteran!
  15. check tonys pics I think I saw someone using an L shaped probe via the hole. The hole looked to be maybe 3/8 to 1/2 inch when I took a peek at Theos KK. I wondered the same thing, buut figured it must fit since nobody had mentioned not being able to get the probe in there. My mistake, it is a straight probe, the wire made it look L shaped: http://upload4.postimage.org/500730/photo_hosting.html can anyone confirm that an L shaped probe will fit?
  16. Mine actually seals It almost looks like you got a #5 door with your #7 grill. I was going to devise something to plug the polder hole when I get my KK. Not permanently, since I will use it sometimes for my wireless maverick. Maybe with a rubber stopper on the outside, just to keep rain out during the tropical downpours here in FL, and to keep smoke from staining the grout above it when its not in use during a cook. It might also be a good idea here, since it woudl help keep the occasional adolescent lizard (which like to lurk inside of the tube on my mexiK gas draftdoor), or other wildlife from squatting.
  17. only a little impaired! Of course, this same friend and I have also cooked a whole meal wrapped in foil on the engine of my Jeep while on the way to a road game.
  18. So did you cook it? Did you try this out and give it your seal of approval? If so - Where's the pics?
  19. Good to hear! I have found that my K5 responds better to adjustments at the top, not the draft door. It was definitely tricky to get the hang of it.
  20. Heat shield on a Smokey Joe Jasen - I had a fried who used a disposable pie pan as a heat shield on his smokey joe when we took it tailgating. He put it in upside down, over the coals, and put some thumb sized holes in it (mostly around the outside) to allow for airflow. Seemed to work well - but that was in Missouri...all the games were at noon or 1, so we started drinking at 7 or 8am. That might have influenced our judgement!
  21. I soak it I leave my corn in the husk, and soak it for an hour or so before it hits the grill. Let it roast for about an hour (depending on your temp).
  22. Okay Pchop, you have inspired me. I will give this beast a try - maybe for the 4th? I will see if the local Sam's or BJ's can set me up with me meat.
  23. Oh my God that is funny! ROTF-LMAO! <>
  24. a couple of hours ago... This thread would have been imploding! Especially after the last couple of posts
