good idea Yeah, I figured you were using the sear that way for the handles. Great idea. It's certainly possible to get the main grill tipping as you try to finagle it out of there with big leather gloves. Silicone BBQ gloves are a little more form fitting and provide a smidge more dexterity.
-
Well, I was referring to placing the sear, with the short handles down, on the main with the brisket on the sear. Not the use of the sear, with the tall handles down, as an elevated platform above the main, for the pie. That configuration I use and understand.
-
Actually, that sounds cool as hell!
-
Cook, you totally confound me. I'm naive, dumb as a stump, or something. OK, are you going to put fabric on the scaffold and roll it over top of the KK from time to time?
-
Fish sticks, sausage and habanero. That's a batchelor fest.
-
What is Komodo-Kamada? What does a a scaffold have to do with a cover? What are you converting to what? ?????
-
That's an unusual use of the sear grill placed on the main. What's that all about?

Check with the Zildjian cymbal factory. They are experts at this and do it all day.

You mean specifically Harley touring bikes, or just any new touring bike from any maker in general? My R100 RS is an '84 model, so it's long in the tooth, but still a super ride.
-
No doubt there is a Harley mystique and culture. I tuned up a Sportster and then took it out for a test ride. It seemed so totally weird and foreign to me compared to the Italian and British bikes, but I kind of liked it. I was so jacked up with testosterone at the time all I wanted to do was go as fast as possible and corner with my knee in the asphalt. So the Harley had no appeal to me other than as a curiosity. But now I think I could enjoy it in a different way. Sort of as an alternative to Ducati racing or Beemer touring. Enjoy it just for the "Harleyness" of it!

These folks might be able to help you convert a propane torch head to natural gas: http://www.gas-tec.com/applications.html They are primarily dealing with commercial cutting torches, not home owner torches, but they might know something. If you pull this off, please let us know!!

simple fix Yeah, the only damage I had to the Beemer was the aluminum rocker cover abraded all the way through. I just replaced that and the gasket and went on my merry way. For a crotch rocket, I would only ever ride a Ducati. If you ride sport bikes and have not had a ride on one, you just don't know. The first time I threw a leg over one, I was stunned and mesmerized. It was like the first time I drove a Ferrari; an other worldly experience. Those Italians have something magical, I don't know how or why. Same for bicycles, if I'm not on a Colnago, I'm not riding. For non sport riding, the Beemer is it. I do admit to a European bias, when I was in college, I was a motorcycle mechanic at a shop that sold Moto Guzzi, Laverda, Ducati, Triumph and Norton!

trick Here's a trick for getting a hot grilling fire going really fast. Fill a charcoal chimney about 1/3 full and hit it from below with a torch. Once it's going a little from the bottom, fill it up and then hit it from the top. That chimney will be raging in a very few minutes. Dump that out and spread it over a basket full of lump.

Sorry, I just re-read your post, you want to use your propane torch head for natural gas. Neither the gas company nor an appliance shop can help you there. I don't think that will work unless you do a homemade modification. You might check youtube or instructables.com to see if any one has modded a propane head to use natural gas. What you CAN do is get the gas company or appliance shop to help you fit a stove top burner with the right jet for NG, and then use that burner under your charcoal basket. I don't recall if Dennis has his burners available jetted for both gases. Dennis' burner with a NG jet would be your cleanest install, email him.

You need different sized jets. Check with the gas company or an appliance shop, they are used to switching between gases.

leathers Well, it wasn't style he was referring to, but protection. Wearing full leathers in the Texas heat is a killer. Sadly, I no longer fit in to the custom made Bates leathers I had made in college. I try to put them on and they seem like they were made for a 5 year old anorexic.

basic, alkaline ash Ash is indeed basic, and fairly fast acting in the soil. According to a garden site I visit, you should apply a max of 2 lbs. per 100 square feet every other year. That is assuming you KNOW your starting soil pH and know that you need to increase it!

Get some photos of the arrival, coming off the truck, uncrating and so on. The KK will be one of the more satisfying purchases you will ever make! I give you a 99% chance of never having buyers remorse. Welcome to the world of ceramic cooking, it's the best.

yep Penny got a muffler burn from said Beemer, but over the years the scar has faded. It was bad at the time, 1990!

scooters In college, I threw my Ducati 750 Sport and myself down the road wearing only shorts and a T shirt, plus a helmet. Pretty sure I had it cranked so far over I ran off the edge of the tread on the then top sport tires, Dunlop K-81's. Got some unbelievably painful road rash, but thats it. Another time I did exactly the same thing on a BMW R75/6. The cylinder actually acted like a crash bar and I slid to a stop from 70 mph with nary a scratch. I used to take big road trips touring the American west on a Norton Commando 850, if you can believe that! A tent, a sleeping bag and my girlfriend were the three necessities. Now I ride a Ducati 888 SPO and a Beemer R100 RS with a little more restraint.

vac I use the Shop Vac with drywall filter. I only remove the ashes when cold and the fire fully out. Usually just prior to a cook. It's fast, clean, no blowing clouds of ash, and thorough.
-
better half returns Yep, I'm fully clothed, took out the trash, cleaned the bathrooms and the kitchen, vacuumed and swept, most importantly got Penny's favorite KK grub going, a Boston Butt pork shoulder roast! She'll have a nice welcome home meal. Even found a ridiculously cheap but tasty Chardonnay to go with. We usually drink French reds, but it's so freaking hot a nice cold white is in order for a Texas summer's eve.
-
too much info KK for sure, I'll leave it to others to describe ancillary uses.
-
keep it I would keep the blow dryer, sometimes you will use it, sometimes not. I use one occasionally and just blow down from above. Do you "need" it? No, but it's fun to play with sometimes.
-
Absolutely you can. Just don't expose it to direct flame.
