Grates running from 12 to 6 oclock?

Recommended Posts

I would love to see the cooking grates running from 12 to 6 oclock instead of the current 9 to 3 config. Not a BIG deal' date=' just would make the flipping and turning of product easier.[/quote']

What ya all think..?

Is this something worth doing/changing?

Ummm - It looks like the poll is worded backwards.

My two cents worth is that it would make flipping easier to have them run 12 to 6, but it is not a major issue.

To Change or Not to Change

As is.. has worked great for me.

Past experience suggest that when one tries for what they falsely think is that last little improvement they end up screwing up a great thing.

If there are enough firm orders it might be worthy of consideration. For mass production, well.. "It's hard to knock success!"

Heh heh, love that trick question on the poll:

Whatcha think?

Leave grates in the 12 to 6 o'clock position

Change to the 9 to 3 o'clock position

I think we should leave the grates in the 9 to 3 o'clock position but only between the hours of 12 to 6 o'clock! :D:lol::lol:

Yeah, I only notice the issue when flipping burgers, so it isn't huge. Perhaps there should be some 9 to 3 testers (side to side, perp to the burger spatula), to see if there's an unforeseen consequence we're not picturing?

When I read this thread title, it ran together for me with "what's cooking..." As in, if our KK isn't working the night shift on some butt or brisket, we're not serious? (Tonight's pizza rocked...)

OK! I confused myself after waking up from a nap! "Leave the grates in the 12 to 6 position?" ( they are in the 9 to 3 position now!)And I just voted to move them to the 9 to 3 position! Damned blue cheese olives!

Maybe just the sear grill could run 12 to 6 if not the main grill? I think it 's easier to clean the grates if they run this way too, if you use a brush. The hinge could be on the side on the main grate kinda like the Weber grates currently are configured. I'll be quiet now and pour myself another Martini, without those pesky olives, they make me sleepy and Denise says they make me snore! Happy Fourth everyone! Going camping near my old stomping grounds on the Wapsipinicon River( Think I may have a Fifth while we're at it!) :wynar: Geeze, I hope the FBI isn't reading this, now I'll never get to be a Congressman! Although I could be Governor...hmmn!

The only advantage I can see from a 12-6 grate would be cleaning them. I use a grill floss, so its harder to get the outer edge of the grates scraped, especially near the back, but its really not a big deal. If switching the grate direction meant moving the hinge to the side, or losing it completely, I would prefer to keep it as is.

You just itching to tweak something lately or what?? I have a couple of ideas if you want. :P

I vote with Primeats for 12 to 6 on the sear grill for turning fish and burgers. I wouldn't mind it on the main grill either as long as it still had the hinged area big enough to allow me to slip the heat deflector in if I want to add it later in a cook, like I can now.

9 to 3; or 6 to 12; I think we can make a song out of this !!!!!

The change makes sense on the sear grill I don't think I would change the main grill.

Grate angle

I think you should make a special California addition and advertise the grate as being 4:20!! LOL Seriously though, the current configuration is fine.

With 15 votes we're running about 50-50, I wonder if it would make sense to split the difference and go with a ~45 degree angle? For the super-sized grills especially it may be nice to get diamond sear marks by lining up meat either horizontally or vertically.

Personally I don't think I'd mind either configuration.

I use a grill floss as well and changing the grill configuration would make it harder to clean IMHO rather than easier. For the grills floss to work best I find I need to scrap from two directions. Scrap the grate from one side and then flip 180 and do it from the other side. If the grates run 12 to 6 this becomes impossible because of the lid. I say leave it alone.
