Chanly1983 Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 My wife wants me to audition for thanksgiving for her family. What would be the best way to spin a good size turkey on my 32? I already have a set of Octoforks and a KK spit rod. Would a KK roti basket be the best way or do you think Octoforks with butchers twine work? I spun 2 chickens and a pineapple last week and they turned out AWESOME! 4
Pequod Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 Truss it and use either the standard forks or OctoForks.
Bruce Pearson Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 Nice cook. How big of a turkey? I’m thinking what Pequot said but if it’s a really big turkey the standard forks might work better for a more even cook. Either way I look forward to see how it turns out.
tony b Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 If it's a big turkey (20+ lbs), then I'd go with the rotisserie basket. Smaller birds (12 - 14 lbs) would do fine on the regular roti rod/forks or the Octo's.
Chanly1983 Posted July 7, 2018 Author Report Posted July 7, 2018 I am thinking mid-teens. If it turns out half as awesome as the 2 chickens then I am a shoe in for head chef at thanksgiving! I think Dennis was right when he told me it is almost impossible to over cook when using a KK. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I will probably try it late August or October. My backyard has NO shade and the weather has been rather warm. We finally broke down and had a tree planted to eventually give us some shade until we save up to build a pergola. 2
tony b Posted July 7, 2018 Report Posted July 7, 2018 You're not that far from me and the weather here was brutal up until Thursday night. Very nice now. Hope it stays this way for a few more days, as I have lots of weed pulling to catch up on, as it was way too hot to do that this past week.

BBQ Iguana Posted November 13, 2018 Report Posted November 13, 2018 Spinning a 16.5 lb turkey Saturday in the basket. Any feedback on how long it might take?
tony b Posted November 13, 2018 Report Posted November 13, 2018 What temp do you plan to roast it at? Are you cooking direct or with a drip pan?
BBQ Iguana Posted November 15, 2018 Report Posted November 15, 2018 Drip pan to be used and 350-375 temp. Figure 3+ hours? Purchased a MEATER probe to help monitor without opening the kk
tony b Posted November 15, 2018 Report Posted November 15, 2018 The MEATER app will give you an estimate on cooking time, once everything has stabilized. I've found it to be fairly accurate.
