Huge gusher of hot gas and mud

As if Tsunamis and earthquakes were not enough.. On May 28th improperly drilled well hit a reservoir of hot mud under pressure. This has turned into a disaster of Biblical proportions...

1,800 meters into the exploratory gas well being drilled near Surabaya, the drillers attempted to shake loose a stalled drill bit and it broke or disappeared, a torrent of stinking, toxic mud and hydrogen sulphide gas boiled to the surface, spraying gas 10 meters into the air.

For the first couple of months 50,000 cubic meters a day shot thru the 6" pipe.. They can't and probably will never be able to stop it.. There will be a mountain there soon.. At present 11,000 people are homeless..

It's now coming out at 126,000 cubic meters a day. For you metric clueless a M3 is a cube 39" X 39" X 39"

That's an area 10miles X 10miles 13 feet deep EVERY DAY!

Wanna read more... Google search Sidoarjo Mudflow

I drove thru this on the way to Mount Bromo last week :lol::lol:

Ahem.

Metric clueless? How about math clueless???

That's actually an area 1 mile x 1 mile x 1.9 inches.:shock::shock:

Don't worry, that's only 3 orders of magnitude off. :oops:

BTW, you misspelled "coming." :P :P

Ok that's embarrassing.. I pasted that from an Email I had received and just thought Damn!! Did the math.. I stand corrected..

Enjoy this my friend.. It does not happen often :lol::lol::lol: Spelling.. it's that damn spell checker DJ installed.. gotta click submit!

126 000 cubic meter = 102 acre feet

1 square mile = 3097600 square yards = 640 acres.

102/640 = .16 x 12 = 1.9"

That's still a whole lotta smelly mud!

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Oh sure, just blame the drunk guy cause you can't spell or do math - hahahaha! :smt064 I don't like that spell check either, but it was the only one I could find like it; I use the google toolbar which has a built in spell check that works much better!

Mud update

How's the mud, Dennis? I understand "they" are trying to stop it by strangling it with cement necklaces of giant concrete beads.

Does the mud have any redeeming features? I mean, is it usable as a construction material, spa mud bath, or anything? Or just a horrid mess?

Hope you are all still un-mudded. Any news so far?
