    Starting a KK

I'm lazy but not sure whether the gas option is the best (looks fairly cluttered having it always connected?) I can only imagine since I haven't seen a KK with it connected. Does anyone have photo's of their KK with the gas option connected? Am also unsure whether the American gas connections are compatible with the Aussie ones, a friend of ours brought their Scottish barbecue when they moved to Sydney (yeah I know who'd have thought that they sold BBQ's in Scotland?) and they had to get a special connector to connect an Aussie gas bottle to their BBQ.
  2. I know that my smoker (Weber Smokey Mountain though, i.e. not a ceramic) runs about 15 degrees hotter on the top level (I read this on the WSM website. I think that the KK ditributes its temperatures more evenly hence only a 10-15 degree difference?
  3. That looks jummy!! (all of them). What is the "little" thermometer for (in the shoulder picture stuck into the side of the KK?) I'm hungry now!
  4. Agreed, great site (has a nice forum as well); I learned to slow cook on my WSM but I think it's time to upgrade to ceramics...
  5. Should we be asking for pictures? I'm still making up my mind as to what model to buy and any pictures are very helpful (to make the choice harder ) since they all look great (well some colours might not be my first choice but.....) 2 more days to 2007 (the year I get my KK)
  6. Thanks for your answer.. I posted a follow-up question in the KK 411 section almost time for

What I currently do (with my Weber Smoker) is put all the old charcoal/briquettes in the chimney and start them again after which I pour them into the holder at the start. Is this the way you would "restart" a KK or do you just leave the existing coals in there and poor new ones on? I have a guru (which should nicely fit on the KK) to regulate the temps (yep I'm lazy)...
  8. What if you have to "refill" the KK during a long cook? Don't the grates prevent you from filling up the bottom coalholder? Sorry for al the questions... Regards, Paul
  9. Wow, thanks for the prompt reply. So as far as I can tell (Christmas spirits over here so lunches are mainly liquid) it has four levels and in the supreme you get grills for main and middle level. You can then buy the additional grill which allows cooking at main + 1 and at the lowest level (searing only). Do you know what the temp differences are between the main, main+1 and middle level (using the heat deflector?). I understand that the searing grill is superhot... It looks like a GREAT BBQ... Regards, Paul
  10. Hi turtle, I'm still trying to make up my mind what model to get... Since you have the supreme wouldn't the additional upper grill only be useful for the "top". The supreme comes with a lower grill (I assumed that grill was for searing?). Regards, Paul
  11. Thanks guys, I saw the Christmas specials but (correctly?) assumed that was in relation to US stock.. But if you feel so inclined to offer an 07 discount on Indonesian stock I won't say no... Still a bit worried about our lovely Oz customs people (they are very strict and not always careful with cargo!).

The upside down bit takes a bit of getting used to, but I'm a fully acclimatised anti-pod now... BTW getting charcoal isn't the easiest thing to get here it's mainly briquettes!
  13. Personally I steer clear of eating skippy (mainly cause I don't like the taste!). Emu is fine (great country if you can eat all the animals on the nation's emblem!). Anyway I haven't ordered my KK yet (still working on getting the money authorized by the boss (aka my wife)). I really like the supreme but have yet to figure out whether the laser cut steel is worth the difference (isn't that the major difference between the delux and the supreme). Anyway I'll be asking more questions in the KK411 area! Thanks for all your help it looks like a friendly forum! CU Paul
  14. I guess the site admin's are too busy deleting spam accounts to say hi to new users. My name is Paul and I'm a Weber user (feels like I'm in an AA meeting) and am curious about the ceramic cookers (read very interested and want to buy me a KK asap). I live with my wife and 2 dogs, 2 cats in Sydney Australia, land of the barbie! (i.e. BBQ). Although I was born in Holland (liked the picture of the crane) I'm now quite comfortable down-under. I'm not sure whether I'll use the same method on arrival of my Komodo I reckon I can get some of my big aussie mates do help me (in return I'll offer beer and ribs) CU on this forum, Paul

Hi all, great forum... I'm considering getting a ceramic cooker to my BBQ collection and am very impressed with what I've read so far on the KK... Can someone please tell me what is involved with lighting up one of these babies? I have a weber chimney (and am happy with that) but can see problems "dropping" it in from the top of the KK or would you use the gas starter that comes as an extra? Or just paper and it fires up quick enough? This is just question one I have several. Regards, Paul
