Jlipp79
Has anyone tried Pok Pok Thaan charcoal?
Syzygies
Yes. The forum search will find old threads on this. I like it. Pricey, more flavor than the very neutral KK extruded coconut. It reminds me of roadside barbecue in Thailand, which I miss. Definitely worth a try.
Mcjudsten
We also liked it, like the fruitwood profile. Burn time was solid. Not in the regular rotation for us due to cost and local availability.
tony b
Yes, I've used it. As noted, not exactly the same as KK extruded cocochar, closer to binchotan for yakitori grills, but a nice hot, long-burning charcoal. Available via Amazon. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00R8HILG8
Poochie
It looks a lot like this stuff from Academy. It's really good stuff, but don't shake the coal basket after a cook. This stuff will disintegrate. It burns for a long time and is only $15 for 30lbs.
tony b
Where do you buy it, @Poochie?
Poochie
Academy Sports stores. We have 2 in my area. They also carry B&B charcoal and BBQing supplies.
johnnymnemonic
@PoochieI also have tried "blazing coco". It disintegrates as well after it has burned once. Leaves behind a ton of crap if it doesn't fully burn. Not recommended.
tony b
Unfortunately, there are no Academy Sports in Iowa, yet. Win some, lose some!
dillgaya
It's really awesome but what do you think about ceramic pan?
Poochie
Here's some great advice from that link: The best way to know if a pan is safe in the oven is to look for a symbol that says the pan is safe in the oven. It's the kind of information that makes you scratch your head and wonder if the world has gone to ****. Enameled cast iron would be my first choice. The link is for non-stick pans and not ceramic. A ceramic pan can take heat up to around 350 degrees F.
