braindoc Posted February 2, 2025 Report Posted February 2, 2025 Just curious - what smoking woods does everyone prefer? I gravitate toward cherry or apple for poultry/pork, hickory for beef. Maybe its time for me to try some others. Any brands in particular? I’ve been reading about Fruita Wood and wonder if it is as good as the reviews say.
C6Bill Posted February 3, 2025 Report Posted February 3, 2025 Peach for Pork/Poultry and Post Oak for beef. I have tried any others but now i stick to those two. And I always get mine from Fruita Wood. 2
tony b Posted February 3, 2025 Report Posted February 3, 2025 I'm also a fan of Fruita Wood. I stick to the "classics" - peach, cherry, apple, mesquite, post oak and hickory. I still have a bit of coffee wood from Dennis. I wish that I could still get pimento wood chunks for doing jerk chicken. I only have a few pieces left. 1
Tyrus Posted February 3, 2025 Report Posted February 3, 2025 Cherry, Maple, White and Red oak, Red and White Birch are common around here braindoc and in abundance on hand. Since I like to resource my own from whats about or at the local firewood provider in his pile to pick, you made realize I haven't had any apple or peach in a while. Rather than order from an on line provider I went ahead and called a local orchad in the area. Springtime is just around the corner and they start pruning soon, they might even thin the herd and remove a few trees for reasons of their own. I spoke to a family member owning the orchard and he asked me to contact him later in the week after he spoke with his grandfather. Just a thought, I like my wood fresh...straight off the farm if available 2

braindoc Posted February 4, 2025 Author Report Posted February 4, 2025 Re: Fruita Wood Do you order the chunks or another size?
tony b Posted February 4, 2025 Report Posted February 4, 2025 I've tried the splits, but found them generally too big, so I stick to the regular chunks. 1
C6Bill Posted February 4, 2025 Report Posted February 4, 2025 I like the splits, i will take a hatchet and split each one into three. But chunks are good too.
C6Bill Posted February 22, 2025 Report Posted February 22, 2025 We jinxed them, just got an email they are closing 4/15 🤬 1
tony b Posted February 22, 2025 Report Posted February 22, 2025 I was just about to post that notification as well. I'm happy for their retirement, but it sucks for us BBQ'ers, as they were a great source for smoking woods. Anyone got a "Plan B?" 1

jonj Posted February 23, 2025 Report Posted February 23, 2025 I ordered some peach wood today. Not surprisingly, it seemed several of their other woods were out of stock. 2

tony b Posted February 24, 2025 Report Posted February 24, 2025 I checked my inventory and ordered mesquite and apple chunks. I noticed that they aren't offering the mixed boxes anymore. So, I ended up having to order 10 lbs of each.
tony b Posted February 25, 2025 Report Posted February 25, 2025 Got another email from the Fruita folks. They got swamped with orders after the announcement, so they've taken the website down and not taking any more orders until April. They will do inventory at that time and sell off what's left, but in large lots of 30 & 45 lbs boxes. 1
Tyrus Posted March 8, 2025 Report Posted March 8, 2025 (edited) Well Braindoc they're pruning the orchards about now getting ready for spring and for $80.00 I bought this crate of apple wood. Mind you now this wood is green (fresh off the tree) and a fork truck had to put it in the bed of my truck. Here's some pics to give you an idea of the quantity vs pre bagged. Now if I was to use this as chunks in the KK you could say it's pretty close to a lifetime supply. Earlier this week I bought seasoned limbs enough to fill a cardboard orange crate for $20, that'll tide me over until I cut these into smaller pieces for seasoning. Where there's a will, there's a way. Edited March 9, 2025 by Tyrus 4
braindoc Posted March 8, 2025 Author Report Posted March 8, 2025 Maybe my wife will let me get a pickup so I can cruise Rhode Island looking for orchards pruning their trees. 2
Tyrus Posted March 9, 2025 Report Posted March 9, 2025 Don't wait, every car has a trunk brother and a back seat....it's just down the street 2
tony b Posted April 14, 2025 Report Posted April 14, 2025 Some good news. Got an email from the owner of Fruita woods. He's sold the business to Denver Firewoods. They are in transition, so we won't be able to check them out just yet. But it's nice to know that we will have some options again for getting smoking wood chunks/splits. From the email: I am proud to announce that one of my suppliers has elected to take over the websites in effort to keep fruitawood.com and fruitawood chunks.com ALIVE!!! I am confident the Denver Firewood team will be able to continue providing you the same quality wood I have for the past 16 years. I am in the process of transferring the websites and all necessary information over to them. Please allow sufficient time to update the websites and get inventory available to start accepting orders. 3
C6Bill Posted April 15, 2025 Report Posted April 15, 2025 I was extremely happy to see that email !!!! I got one of their last boxes of Post Oak but missed out on Peach. Those are the only two i use, well occasionally some grape vine but I get that free from a friend. 1
