KK Smoke generator use with older kk23 OTB gen 2.2, requiring adaptor tube.

Recommended Posts

Anyone with an older 23 OTB gen 2.2, that does not have the factory smoker port on it along with the KK smoker tube?  How exactly does the tube mount to it? It says it uses the BBQ Guru port, but not seeing how it is supported like it would be with the now factory installed mount?

And if so, do you like it ?

Thanks!

On older KKs without the new retrofit kit, when using the hot/cold smoker in the Guru port, it is unsupported. On mine, at least, the bent smoker tube is under enough tension with the weight of the smoker cylinder to resist rotation.

That said, I believe some affix a support through the smoker cap handle to ensure it remains vertical (wire to the side table, for example).

I need to talk to Dennis to get the retrofit adapter kit and actually fix mine correctly.

jonjbc,

If you are using the Guru tube the way you have it set up, what adaptor do you need? Is that the one where you have to drill into your smoker ?  Not sure I want to go through all that LOL!

I usually. use a bbq guru controller, but could get used to manual temp control I suppose LOL.. And can't really justify buying a whole new cooker for it..   This one is still awesome !   Bought in 2008, and this is my second one.. :)

I've had mine for a while but it came with the appropriate adapter. No drilling required; the guru port is strong and deep enough to support the cold smoker. It can rotate but i haven't had it rotate without help from me.

After updating to the newer two dial air intake plate, I took the dial off the old single dial intake plate, used high temp duct tape to seal up the extra hole, and mounted the Thermoworks billows fan to the other hole and used my Thermoworks Signals thermometer to monitor and control the cook temperature. I've posted pics of this somewhere on the forum.

I have an older 23 KK and have no issues with using the cold smoker tube inserted directly into the BBQ Guru port. While I sometimes think that it would be nice to run the Guru and cold smoker at the same time, I really haven't thought that my cooks suffered as a result of only using the cold smoker solo.

That is pure genius !   I like how you think!  Might be a copy cat !! Thank you!!

Thanks for your input! Glad to know it supports it...   Makes me wonder, who needs the port you have to drill in? Did they make one even older one that had no guru port ?

@Saucier, as the comments of @jeffshoaf and @tony b note, I didn't need an adapter to use the guru port for the hot/cold smoker. I think Jeff's modification would work well with the Billows fan (which I use as well), and I have thought about ordering another air intake plate to adapt it.

That said, I think the main benefit of doing the retro version of the dedicated smoker port is to get the benefit of securing affixing the hot/cold smoker cylinder to the KK body. While I haven't had any issues with it moving around (and neither has Jeff, apparently), I very much like the elegance of Dennis's design of the new dedicated port and attaching points for the hot/cold smoker.

At some point, I'll overcome inertia and make a decision on which method to use...
