How do you start your Fire?

Hi all,

Was wondering how everyone here start their fire.

I used to start mine with lighted newspaper at the center.

Have not grilled in a lot of time but Im about to get a KK.

I use a mapp torch, very simple, very reliable.

I use a propane torch. It is fast.

I've done everything from starter cubes, rubbing alcohol drenched cotton balls, cooking oil soaked paper towels, to MAPP torch. By far the best is the MAPP torch which is what I use. I can't imagine changing to anything else.

When I had a Kamado Joe, I used a weed burner for hot and fast cooks and a heat gun for a low and slow. Plan to do pretty much the same when my bronze baby arrives.

I have a pair of weed burners that I use for all cooks. The first one stopped lighting, so I bought another, but kept both in service. I attached hose clamps to the middle of each wand, so they balance nicely on the KK rim, unattended. 

 

Pvt. Joker: Can you use weed burners to light KK lump for low & slow cooks?

 

Helicopter gunner: It's easy. You just don't light them as much.

Was a chimney guy for decades, but based upon the feedback here, I've switched over to the propane torch. I went with this one.

Like that it's long so you don't have to get down inside the KK to light it.

Looks like around $40. Harbour Freight had mine. Different design much cheaper.

I use a Berzomatic weed torch, shaped like a cane.

uses regular small camp propane tanks.

works great, low cook, just light a small amount of coal.

the spark strike is on the shaft.

Can't refill, but mine has lasted well over a year, and they're inexpensive.

Got it on Amazon. This model is discontinued, but they still have some in stock. The price has doubled    since I bought mine, so seek out cheaper versions. But beware, some with the built-in striker have reliability issues. Mine has done well so far. Just read the reviews (if any) before you buy!

As a former Scout, I find the most effective way to start a fire is to rub two chunks of lump together!
