I have experience with the gas burner and I prefer to use a chimney starter. The burner was fine, but it has issues due to ash etc. The chimney is fast and easy and no gas tank sitting around.

I typically line mine with foil to avoid the dreaded scrubbing. So it's closer to sparkling than crusty, but it doesn't exactly sparkle..

I've tested and you can't maintain a fire without some air outlet above the fire. So you are correct; Aliens!!

How is your Guru shutter set? (the adjustable door on the fan). I set mine at about half, that is usually fine. Air can pass through the fan when it is not running, if in doubt close it down more, the fan may run more, but it will help control the natural draft caused by any leak or overly open top damper.

I sent them a similar note, and didn't even score a reply! Perhaps I'll try again...

Welcome Chris. Great picture Dennis!! That needs to be on the front page of the site! -
I could go either way. My first thought was out a bit, but flush is nice. My biggest problem is keeping the kill plug in the hole, it doesn't fit very tight and sometimes shutting the lid will blow it out. That may be of some concern for someone who has no intention of using a Guru/Stoker.

I have the finished product. The leg was moved forward and extended slightly to make it tip-proof. Here are the details; it's 5 1/4" front to back and has 4" high legs. It is all 1/4 stainless and TIG and resistance welded, so like your original KK grills, it won't rust! If desired, you can also use it with the Rotisserie, you will want drill a small hole in the upper grill ledge to hold it in place. I will work with the 6" or 8" basket. The price will be $35.00 plus shipping (I haven't weighed it yet, but it will probably be around a 5 pound shipping weight) email me; use email button at the bottom of the message. Many uses! On the upper grill On the lower grill; On the ledge with the sear grill With the 6" or 8" Roti You will need to reverse the clamps as shown to use the 8" basket, the 6" will work perfectly with the clamps on the outside.

Re: Temp is back down No reason you can't put the heat deflector in now. Put it on the lump basket and a drip pan on the lower grill. Work quickly and reassemble, no problem.
-
Re: KK care Yes, sometimes when I'm in the mood, waiting for it come up to temp. Shouldn't be. Ceramic tile is very durable, just don't use anything that would be bad for the grout, like acid etc.

Ah yes, the shut down appears to have been rapid.

I used my new KKECC for the first time over the weekend on a rib cook. It worked great, it took a long time to get up to temp, even with the Guru blasting away on it. Next time I will either light more or make sure to start earlier. The ribs had the best smoke flavor yet. Is it possible that the neutrality of the KKECC actually allows for the better infusion (less obstruction) of the smoke wood? I did nothing significantly different than before (other than the charcoal)

Nice looking grill, now maybe you can find some time to work on the landscaping!

Re: Roti Chicken Read right over the lower grill part....

Jackie, You can clip the Guru probe to the thermometer shaft in the lid. Regarding the Weber lump holders for roti use http://www.amazon.com/Weber-7403-Char-B ... 016&sr=8-5 maybe everyone already does this, but if you turn your lump basket so the handles run left-right you can put those baskets behind the handles and it works great. They are very inexpensive and should solve your problem. I think DJ had reported a conflict between the HD and the roti basket of certain versions of the GenII. I think Dennis has shortened the handles to eliminate that conflict (I understand that won't help you)

I checked this last night, my sear grill legs are not in the same spot on both sides, one side would hold it fairly well, the other is an inch too far forward. So it's possible that could work depending on the particular sear grill however, the "hold me on the ledge pin" kinda needs to be put on the piece when it's made.
-
That would not be a problem, however, it will sit and stay fine on any of the grills. The problem that DJ struggled with is, how to keep it on the ledge. The current solution is to have a small pin that fits into a hole that would need to be drilled, if the user desires it to be used with the roti, or on the ledge when using the sear grill on the lump basket.
-
I will look at the sear/acc grill interaction. One problem I can envision is that there are a few versions of the lump basket that may not allow for a universal solution. 2nd, my sear grill has quite a bit of movement possible when on the lump basket, that would likely allow the accessory grill room to roam! I wish there was an alternative to grill modification. With the legs, you have a device that is useful as a stand alone on any of the grills, and if someone doesn't want to modify (drill a small hole in) their grill, they only loose the use with the roti, or as you state, in a super elevated state relative to the sear grill.
-
I don't know yet, I just got it and the first thing I did was take these pictures. I have been lusting over yours for months now!
-
Bob, you will still need a hole/notch to use it with the roti. That part is not on this prototype. I don't think I would trust it to stay on the ledge without some type of mechanical restraint. I thought the legs give it added versatility and not everyone has a roti, but most everyone has needed/wanted a second level for moving items around during a cook.
-
It's not bad now, but I know it needs to have the leg moved out to the front rod, not inset as it is now. You have a good suggestion.

Using DJ's original idea that was developed here viewtopic.php?t=2354&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 I asked a family member who works for a wire products company for a prototype. Here it is; I added legs so it could be used on any of the grills (main, lower or sear) as well as hanging it from the main grill ledge as DJ has done. It will work with both roti baskets. The question is; Who would be interested in one? If I can gauge the interest level, then I can get quote based upon the approx quantity. You could PM me or post your interest here. The final version will be approx 5 inches wide (front to back) and the legs will come all the way to the front, the legs are 4" high. All made from 1/4" stainless.
