  1. One of my best friends asked me to cook Japanese for her birthday. I know she loves tempura and that she wanted me to cook her favourite, black cod, but she got none of that. Instead she, and our other friends, got a KK adventure. It was fun to do and really delicious on the night. No plated shots and there would have been no shots at all but for the fact that one of our number is young and took these photos for one of those social media sites - Snapchat or Instagram or something. Started with a drink from my favourite bar tender, The Husband. It is from the PDT book and uses red pepper and shiso. Unusual and really delicious. Here's how to make tofu delicious. Smear it in white miso, add chopped shiso to some and ground up black sesame seeds to others and grill real hot on the KK. Throw in a bit of seafood. We live near the sea and the local fish market did us proud with some super fresh fish. We were going to try to do lobster sashimi but the weather had been too bad for lobster fishing so we got some langoustine instead - super sweet raw. I know this all looks expensive but it isn't in the small quantities you need for each course and when you get your stuff from the source. The Japanese grill book says to throw the clams on the grill. I wasn't so brave and used my tagine instead. So good. These baby squid were marinaded in soy sauce and we lost a couple as they dropped between the bars at the start. Cooked super fast - 2 mins each side - they were a delight. One of our number loved the charred one I was able to rescue from the coals! For the eagle eyed amongst you, the crud on the bars is from the prawn course that we don't have any photos for. Broke up all that fishiness with a bit of mushroom. And finally, a spicy sizzling scallop dish to finish. Thank you KK. It really was fun to do and eat. Everything had to be done quickly, reliably and on point and the KK did not let me down.

  3. Aussie's box is in limbo right now, MacKenzie's has left Chicago, and Reef's has left Des Moines.

  5. @ckreef - Aussie's box weighed just over 9.5 lbs and shipping was $89.45. So, pretty much in line with what you paid. I had originally requested "cheapest way," then as I said, the Postal guy said it qualified for the free upgrade. Didn't question it, just rolled with it.

  8. Beautiful meal! You’re using the KK like an old pro. Only problem I see is that the inside of your grill is entirely too clean. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  14. You probably paid for international priority mail which is also why it cost so much. I always ship to Aussie the cheapest way possible. 2 boxes ago (a really heavy box) was the most expensive shipping to him at just over $100. The box I sent him pictured in this thread was $75.

  15. But caveman sounds so much more vivid than paleo. I don't have a good mental picture of what that word brings to mind, but caveman says it all!!

  17. 63 Sam's bite the dust. None here, but I don't shop there, once we got our CostCo. As Jon said - prime grade beef baby!! Plus, they carry Swift Premium pork products that don't have the brine solution added. Get all my ribs and pork butts there. Decent lamb, too. CostCo is the nations largest retailer of alcohol now. I've found some very hard to find wines at mine and their house brand "Kirkland" vodka and tequila are damn good. Rumor has it that the vodka is "Grey Goose" - bottle says distilled from grapes and imported from France. It's half the price of Grey Goose. Don't know about the white (blanco) tequila. They make a whisky, too, but not seen it at my local store. @Jon B. - check to see if your CostCo carries the big hunks of pork belly. I've gotten my last 2 slabs there for making bacon. Very nice - meaty.
