Burrowing Owl

Recommended Posts

Since we're on the subject of owls ... this guy (Great Horned Owl; sorry but the iPhone 6s just isn't good at zoom/telephoto work) has been hanging around the neighborhood.   They supposedly have a nest within a mile or so of our house but we haven't found it; yet :)     Stitch the little Min-Pin gets escorted when she's in the backyard now ;)

Crazy - underground owls!

Believe it or not, I just heard one hooting outside, just before the thunder and lightning started. We have them in the woods at the end of my street, which is a public park. Drives my dog, Kipper, crazy when he hears them! Not a lot of fun at 2am, when you're trying to sleep and the owl's hooting and the dog's barking!

That's cool! I was hoping to get a shot of one in the Badlands when I was there but didn't see one. They live in abandoned prairie dog and ground squirrel burrows.

Congrats on the pic!

On this tour of the Buffalo Ranch we were driving through pastures in a large open sided, covered wagon pulled by a pickup truck. When we drove near the hole he came out and flew 100'+ and landed in the grass. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough on the camera to get a picture of him coming out of the hole.

Fortunately my point and shoot does a great job. I hit the zoom button, pointed in the general direction and snapped 3 pictures. This was the best one. Not bad for not really  seeing what I was doing and bumping along in the covered wagon.

Charles,

Where is this Buffalo Ranch?

Three Suns Ranch  in Porta Gunda FL, a little  North of Fort Meyer. Was an informative tour but not really visually exciting. I got to hand feed and pet the cattle. The Buffalo came close but too skittish to hand w feed or pet. The Owl picture was the best picture as far as I was concerned.

I did buy some really nice looking Buffalo short ribs. Might cook them this weekend.

Will post a couple more pictures tomorrow.

When I lived in Omaha we had a house amongst a hardwood forest near the Missouri River bluffs where we had Barred Owls in our back 60 almost every night booming away.   Just as you stated they often got wound up between midnight and 2:00AM.   They are even louder than Great Horned Owls.   We don't have Barred Owls out here though ... miss them.   They've been killing (legal and sanctioned by the guberment) Barred Owls where their territory overlaps that of the endangered Spotted Owl (Barred Owls were introduced into Spotted Owl country) because Barred Owls are actually predators to the Spotted Owl.

Just in case y'all were wondering :D

A few years ago, my wife and I woke to early morning screaming. It sounded like a woman screaming. We ran to the window to see if we could see anything and didn't see anything. I ran down and outside and didn't find anything and the screaming stopped.

A few mornings later, it happened again and we determined it was a bird noise, but never saw anything. I did some research at the time and best I could tell, it was likely a barred owl.

We went months without hearing it again, then heard it once more and nothing since. Never saw it, unfortunately.
