Enginerd Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Well, its here, unpacked, beautiful, and bit intimidating. I lit up some charcoal last night just to see if I can get the hang of temperature control. Its an art but seems very manageable. I closed it up last night at about 375F, thinking it would suffocate its way down to reasonable temperatures overnight. It was about 325F this morning. Well insulated! Still have to condition it for temps over 400F, but I believe I can get some good cooking done prior to that. I'll probably start with some simple items like steaks, then move onto longer recipes and smoking. Whoo hoo! (nope, no name for it yet, alas "Smaug" is taken) Quote
MacKenzie Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Beautiful, lots of grilling space and the colours fit right in with the landscaping, but I guess that's why you chose the bronze and teak cabinet.. Quote
tony b Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Excellent. Love the setting. Next time, double check to make sure that you have the vents and lid firmly closed. As efficient as the KK is, it shouldn't have stayed that hot overnight if the coals had completely gone out. 1 Quote
5698k Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 I agree with tony, you're fire wasn't out, a likely culprit is the latch wasn't closed completely. Bronze is my favorite btw. Rob 1 Quote
ckreef Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Great looking KK and nice setting. I agree with tony b - shouldn't have held that high of a temp overnight. Make sure vents are closed and you are latched in the second position. Also make sure the vent assembly is fully pushed into the grill along with your second rectangular assembly around back. Jon B. Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Don't know what is more beautiful...the grill or your location? Enjoy!!! Quote
CeramicChef Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 @Enginerd - That is one lovely location for an absolutely gorgeous KK BB! Congrats to you and the whole family. You are going to enjoy cooking out in that beautiful location like you could have never imagined. Again, CONGRATS! You know about the two position latch at this point. Enjoy! Quote
kjs Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 I have the same grill, you are going to love this. Quote
bosco Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 congrats and beautiful setup and surrounding. I had the same issue on my 32" as the fire was staying hot through the night. After speaking with Dennis, he gave me some helpful tips. It turned out that I had to just lower the bottom latch about 3mm and no more air gap Quote
tinyfish Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 What a wonderful cooking location you have have, I bet it makes the food taste better. Quote

The top plate has tiny little welds and can't be adjusted. Also use a normal sized wrench and don't crank down on the bolts extra hard. They just need to be tight enough to hold it. You don't want to shear off one of the bolts. Reef's Bistro Quote
Enginerd Posted June 10, 2016 Author Report Posted June 10, 2016 Thanks all. Yes indeed, the bottom stainless piece had a small gap, then the temperature probe wasn't in. Plenty of airflow. Made some ribeyes the following night, buttoned it up for the night, then it cooled down just fine. 2 Quote
MacKenzie Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 That is wonderful news, all is well.:) Another tip that I read of the forum is to leave the lid lock in the first position after all the fire is out. The will keep the gasket from always being under compression. 1 Quote
5698k Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Just goes to show how little airflow is actually needed! Rob Quote

I guess there is one advantage to jumping in the deep end when buying a grill. There are other LOTR dragons: Glaring, Ancalagon the Black (probably not the best for your grill), Scatha, and the Beast of Gondolin. Hope that helps. And congratulations on your new KK grill! You’re going to love using it. Edited June 14, 2016 by wilburpan 1 Quote
