HalfSmoke has it right, that is the upper grate on top of the main grate. Actually for the 16 the lower grate gets flipped over and set on top of the main grate to make an upper grate. Personally I would go for the 19 TT over the 16 TT if I were you. I have the 22 inch and wanted something smaller and lighter for my winter time cooks. You will find that the distance from fire to grate in more optimal for the larger grill. In my opinion that is one of the best features of the KK, the distance from the fire to the grate. I suspect that once you cook on a KK you will probably not want to cook on any other grill. In my opinion without a doubt the food is more tasty, more juicy and an easier cook that on other ceramic grills. I do have considerable experience on other ceramics so you can take this opinion to the bank. I really an serious. I know I do more winter cooking because I have the 16 because I can roll it out with one hand and get it right to the deck door. I prefer my 22 for baking bread.

Garvin, it just occurred to me that you may not realize that there is much distance between the regular grate and the upper grate.

The blizzard is here and everything is shut down for the entire area. I did get out to feed the critters and birds, wasn't much fun. Thanks tinyfish for sending it my way. I nearly died laughing when I heard Pearson Airport was shut down after receiving 15 cms of snow, and they thought they had a storm. I guess it is all in your perspective. We are forecast 30-60 cm (down graded from 40-70 cm) with winds gusting 90 - 110 kph. With luck all the snow will blow off the deck and I won't have to blow it off after the storm.

Garvin, I only cook small amounts so I can't help you. I bought mine basically for winter cooking. It is so easy to roll this little one out and it heats quickly. One thing to consider is the distance from the fire to the grate. It is as is to expected much shorter in the 16.

Inspired by the current blizzard warning I thought I'd better get that grill working. The only thing I'll be working for the next few days is the snowblower. I had a piece of round steak in the fridge freezer and this morning I decided it was time to get rid of it. Next question how? Decided to grind it with an onion and make burgers. Dress it up with some Provolone cheese, onions, relish and Burger Bomb Sriracha from Williams and Sonoma. The sauce was a gift and my first experience. I loved it. Plated.
